I like to find inspiration in nature and share it.  This philosophy touches upon every sense that we experience as humans: sight, taste, touch, smell, and hearing.  Over the years, while my soapmaking was just a hobby, I worked in the bicycle industry as a mechanic, coach, and advocate.  I remember attending a trails conference where the speaker said that when he “paddled with others in nature, he observed nature”… and when he “paddled alone…[he] was nature.”  I’ve also found these solo adventures to give new context to my decisions and sense of purpose in life. (fig. 1)

Figure 1 Product testing in action: mountain biking in Frick Park, testing a thermal skin balm in sub-zero temperatures – crossing multiple barriers.

Later, I worked in outreach with food access and the music industry, bringing resources to people that would otherwise have barriers.  It was on a section hike along the Pacific Crest Trail that I considered the possibilities of designing a business model around my philosophy.  The demands of back country exploration has inspired me to incorporate medicinal herbs and aromatherapy into Apothecary Muse products that are used everyday, especially by those who spend time outside.  The environmental impact of single use plastics is significant, by and I seek to reduce that with plantable paper soap labels, compostable paperboard tubes for lip balm and deodorant, and reusable glass or tin jars and bottles.  I won’t buy any new plastic.  I test everything I make and have a team of brand ambassadors who are extremely active in the outdoors that also give feedback on seasonal products, although often I’m reusing plastic containers for my own testing. (fig. 2)

These days, I plan my adventures around possibilities for foraging, exploring new places and environmental risks, while balancing skin care needs with herbal infusions and aromatherapy.  I study herbalism with Sage Mountain and aromatherapy with Aromahead, and I'm a regular at my local library consulting Eastern and Ayurvedic Medicine texts to find parallels in philosophies that I might use in my product development.  There is so much to learn and I believe these skills in sustainability and self-sufficiency will be rewarding for many years to come.

And since I believe information can be empowering, I have sought my teaching certification and now offer classes.  The next one is coming up on March 18th at 10:30am at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, in the Farm to Table Conference and further upcoming learning opportunities can be found on the SoapGuild Teacher Guide.   I aim to bring nature to the people - or people to nature - in a very intimate way.

Meet Your Makers: Eryn Hughes of Apothecary Muse

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your handmade business:
Howdy, I’m Eryn Hughes, the owner and adventure aromatherapy maker of Apothecary Muse.  My products combine herbalism and aromatherapy for environmentally safe and practical use by outdoor adventurers who bike, hike, run, paddle or ski.

How did you come up with your business name?

In the 90s and early 2000s, I was a professional DJ, with the name DJ Muse.  Not employing the cutthroat competition tactics observed in my colleagues, I considered it most advantageous to always be in a learning state; humble.  This philosophy continued as my obsession with bikes turned into a mission of advocacy, with an organization I founded to create lifelong cyclists, called Velomuse.  And now, I continue my pursuit of expertise through the senses with herbalism and aromatherapy, but am still closely tied to my cycling roots with the Woodsy Warrior, Bike Face Soap and Skin Salves.

Where do you live?
I am fortunate to work out of my Point Breeze home.  My soap studio is mostly confined to an extra bedroom in my Point Breeze apartment, but it often spreads to the kitchen and outside deck.

Who’s in your family?

Our household includes my supportive and equally creative boyfriend, Justin and our two cuddly – yet demanding - black cats, Burrito and Toni.  The cats hang out in a room treated with an air purifier when I’m using essential oils, because they metabolize essential oils (even in airborne state) differently than humans.  Burrito would supervise every step of my work if she could, though!

If you could sit down and talk to any person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would really enjoy to sit and have tea in the woods with the Dalai Lama, hear his laughter and experience his calm.

What inspires you?
I listen to music and dance a little bit every day, just to feel more like myself and not get weighed down with bureaucratic policies and the state of economics that can interfere with my creative process.  I don’t feel the need to be the best all the time, but it is more important to make something meaningful in my adventures.  When I’m not making products, I’m usually out in my garden or hiking/riding in the woods, and harvesting herbs for infusion into the products.  The sun also gives me a lot of inspiration, in this way.

What is your favorite item you make for Boutique 208 and why?
Although most of my items are seasonal, the Meditation Mixer soap is a year-round favorite because the traditional cold-process soap is made with base oils that have been solar-infused with organic lavender, for a deep, lasting aroma that makes me close my eyes in bliss every time.

What is your favorite item at Boutique 208 that’s not one of your own and why?
This is very difficult, as I also seek meaningfulness in process which I come to learn through the makers and I want to support all my fellow makers.  I recently bought one of Charmed by Jenn’s bracelets with the “Well-behaved women rarely make history.” quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, it is one of my favorite quotes interpreted by many brave women throughout history.  I’ve spent a lot of time looking at this piece, and coming to my own translation.  In addition to the bracelet being made with strong materials that I expect to withstand many adventures, the quote is engraved on a piece of metal that resembles a military dog tag and I think, makes a subtle statement about how women’s rights is evolving.

What advice can you offer to someone who would like to start selling their handmade creations?
Talk to fellow crafters to get an idea of what is required, but do it your own way.  Always be honest and transparent about your process, that is what gives your craft value.

Meet Your Makers: Bethany Shea of Indulgence Bath, Body & Skincare Products

How did you come up with your business name?  There are a few reasons that made "Indulgence" the perfect name for my Bath & Body Products. First, I use all edible ingredients, many of which are used to make some of the most indulgent desserts, such as sugar, cocoa, cooking extracts, and meringue powder. Also, most of the products are scented to remind you of those same treats (and some of them even look like them). Second, the products are rich, and indulgent for the skin, leaving it supple, moisturized, and soft. Third, we tend to think the act of Pampering ourselves with things like bubble baths, sugar scrubs, and rich lotions is quite indulgent. I say "Go ahead, indulge!"

Where do you live?  I live in the South Hills.  My husband and I just bought our first house in Brentwood.

Who’s in your family?  My immediate family is my husband, Sam, and our furbaby Ninja.  Hopefully we will be adding some real babies soon!

If you could sit down and talk to any person, living or dead, who would it be and why?  I would have to say my grandfather.  He was my absolute favorite person in the world, very kind and wise.  I think he would have all kinds of great advice for "grown up" me.

What inspires you?  I am mostly inspired by my family, friends, and clients.  My line started with sugar scrub and lotion, to use during the manicures and pedicures I provide in my mobile spa party business. Every other product was inspired by someone I knew either having a skincare issue, as a gift for someone, or to use in a spa service (sometimes all of the above).

What is your favorite item you make for Boutique 208 and why?  My favorite item is the aloe & green tea moisture serum because of its many uses.  I love a multi-tasker, which is why this little superhero is my favorite.  The moisture serum is an oil-free facial moisturizer, but it also acts as a make up setting spray, and can soothe and promote healing in minor cuts, scrapes, rashes, and burns (especially sunburn).

What is your favorite item at Boutique 208 that’s not one of your own and why?I love the letter Photography. I have my eye on a framed Pitt Picture that my Brother would LOVE.

What advice can you offer to someone who would like to start selling their handmade creations?  The best advice I can give is to only make/sell things that you would want to buy yourself.  If you stay passionate about it, it will show in your work and others will see it in you.  Also, try to make things that you couldn't find anywhere else.  Being unique is the best way to get people to come back for more!
